A rare sight in the midst of a beautiful weekend. Western Pennsylvania sky gazers will be treated to a blue micromoon. The term “Blue Moon” refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month, or the third full moon out of four in a single season. Not the color of the Moon’s face. The first full moon was the “Flower Moon” back on May 1st. The phrase “once in a blue moon” comes from how uncommon the event is. Full moons generally occur every 29.5 days. Monthly blue moons (the second full moon in a month) occur about once every 2.5 – 3 years. December 2028 will feature two full moons.Seasonal blue moons are slightly less common than monthly blue moons, but still average between 2.5 to 3 years between each event. The next seasonal blue moon will be on May 20, 2027.This weekend’s full moon may appear slightly smaller. The Moon is approaching the farthest point in orbit around the Earth, known as “apogee.” Viewing conditions are excellent for western Pennsylvania.
