DURYEA, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — In Duryea, people came out to celebrate the borough’s 125th birthday.
Saturday’s festivities saw a parade through the borough and a community picnic at the Germania Hose Company. Brandishing commemorative 125th anniversary t shirts, the crowd listened to music, ate food, and shopped at booths made of local residents selling everything from baked goods to wooden signs.
Mayor Trina Moss was joined by local government leaders and said the fair was a time to celebrate the community and have a lot of fun.
“It makes me feel awesome,” said Mayor Moss through the music. “And I always say if anyone knows me, I love Duryea and that’s what it’s all about. It’s about community. We are a hardworking, resilient community, that’s what our parents taught us. They taught us to be neighborly, talk to your neighbors, work together, and that’s what this should be all about.”
Incorporated in 1901, the 125th was actually on Thursday, and on the day, they held a church service to honor the history of the town.
Mayor Moss said she couldn’t believe the amount of people that came to the parade and picnic and hopes that it’s a good omen for the next 125 years.
