As Pride Month kicks off, Scranton’s 8th annual Pride flag-raising attracts its largest crowd yet, featuring community speakers, live entertainment and more.
SCRANTON, Pa. — As Pride Month approaches, the 8th annual Pride flag-raising event in Scranton got underway on Sunday morning.
Government officials and city leaders gathered as community members shared their stories.
Children could enjoy making chalk art while singers and poets took a step to perform on the stairs of city hall.
Organizers say it was the biggest turnout they’ve had yet to kick off Pride Month in Scranton.
“It felt powerful. It was important to be here. To be visible, and I know it’s scary times right now, but that visibility matters especially when you have city officials here and elects here to see who we are,” said Olivia Butkiewicz, the board chair of Queer NEPA.
Organizers say this is just the beginning, as countless pride events are scheduled throughout the month all over Northeast Pennsylvania.
