George Lombard Jr. hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first and that’s all the RailRiders pitching staff needed, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre defeated Worcester, 1-0, on Sunday at PNC Field in the series finale.
After losing the first four games to the Red Sox (27-27), the RailRiders (28-27) won the last two in the six-game set — taking Saturday’s game, 7-2.
Lombard hit a leadoff home run 351 feet to right field for the 1-0 lead. He added a double in the third.
RailRiders pitchers made the lead stick. Adam Kloffenstein pitched six innings with three hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Bradley Hanner came on in relief, pitching two hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Peter Strzelecki locked down his second save, pitching a hitless ninth with two strikeouts.
Next up for the RailRiders is a seven-game series against Syracuse, starting Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. Wednesday will be a doubleheader to make up for April 19’s postponement starting at 4:05 p.m. First pitch is 6:35 p.m. for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and Sunday’s game starts at 1:05 p.m.
