Allentown City Council is seeking applicants to fill out the remainder of city controller Jeff Glazier’s term following his death.
Glazier died last Wednesday following an illness. He was 69.
Glazier had been elected city controller three times, most recently in 2023. His current term was set to expire in 2028. Colleagues described Glazier as a dedicated and hard-working public servant.
The city controller is an office independent from both the city council and the city administration, and acts as a “watchdog” over the city’s finances. The controller is responsible for reviewing all city expenditures and the city’s annual budget, preparing audits of city departments and investigating financial losses or alleged mismanagement.
Council will accept applications for interim controller through June 15. Applicants must submit a resume and statements that describe how they would bring value as controller to the city of Allentown.
To qualify, applicants must be registered members of the Democratic party, to which Glazier belonged, for at least 30 days prior to submitting an application.
Applications should be addressed to Allentown City Council and submitted by mail to deputy city clerk Tawanna Whitehead, at 435 Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA 18101; or via email atTawanna.Whitehead@allentownpa.gov
City Council will hold a public meeting to interview qualified applicants and vote on an appointed interim city controller.
According to the city council’s June 3 agenda, members plan to appoint Jacqueline Moore, the city’s internal audit manager, as temporary city controller prior to appointing a candidate to fill out the rest of Glazier’s term.
The annual salary for city controller is $76,000; Allentown voters approved a pay increase in 2023 which increased the salary from the previous $49,894 salary the position paid.
