LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – The Laurel City Council voted on the first reading of an ordinance regarding restoring water disconnection on Tuesday.
Mayor Johnny Magee said the water department recommended increasing the reconnection fee for late bill payments.
Right now, the fee to reconnect water is $32, but it is now being increased to $64.
He said this is only if the customer’s water is turned off for nonpayment and has to get it turned back on.
“It’s just gas prices increasing, the technicians having to go and turn the water off and then go turn it back on, so it’s just the fees that it costs to do business,” Magee said.
Magee said the second reading will be read at the next city council meeting on June 16.
The increase will take effect within 30 days after the meeting.
The city council also approved the purchase of six new pick-up trucks for the water department.
