The Grammy Award-winning Dirty Dozen Brass Band and legendary bassist Ron Carter are headlining the Scranton Jazz Festival in separate shows.
Tickets are on sale now for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band show on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the middle of the 21st festival, which runs Aug. 7-9.
Ron Carter will play with the Emmy-nominated Scranton Jazz Festival Big Band under the direction of Marko Marcinko on Sunday, Aug. 9. Tickets go on sale soon.
The festival also features jazz brunches and free jazz walks, with more than 80 national, regional and local acts.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band concert is Aug. 8 at the Theater at North, 1539 N. Main Ave., Scranton. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the concert at 7. Tickets start at $44.80 and are available at scrantonjazzfestival.org.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is from New Orleans and plays what it calls a “musical gumbo” of traditional brass band music with bebop jazz, funk, R&B and soul.
It has toured in more than 30 countries, recorded 12 studio albums and collaborated with artists including Modest Mouse, Widespread Panic and Norah Jones.
In addition to Carter and the Scranton Jazz Festival Big Band, the Aug. 9 concert will include the Student Ensemble of the Pennsylvania Jazz Institute at Misericordia University.
Carter has recorded more than 2,200 albums. He was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet from 1963 to 1968. Throughout his career, he has recorded with stars such as Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon and Billy Joel.
The Carter concert will be at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, 420 N. Washington Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m. The Student Ensemble will perform at 6, followed by the main act at 6:45.
