Three Rivers Arts Festival returns to Downtown Pittsburgh

YEARS TO COME. A SPACE LIKE THIS ART’S LANDING WOULD TYPICALLY TAKE ABOUT FOUR YEARS TO DESIGN AND COMPLETE, BUT THE TEAM BEHIND THIS PROJECT TELLS ME THEY WERE ABLE TO GET IT DONE IN 22 MONTHS, JUST IN TIME FOR THE NFL DRAFT. THIS IS GOING TO BE A GAME CHANGER THAT WILL CONTINUE TO BREATHE LIFE INTO THIS COMMUNITY LONG AFTER THE DRAFT IS OVER. THE RIBBON IS CUT AND ART’S LANDING WILL SOON BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. I THINK STANDING HERE TODAY WAS HARD NOT TO GET A LITTLE EMOTIONAL. LOOKING OUT INTO THIS FINISHED SPACE AND SEEING HOW PEOPLE ARE GOING TO ENJOY THIS SPACE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME, THAT’S THAT’S WHY WE DID THIS. PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST, KENDRA WHITLOCK INGRAM, SAID IT WAS DESIGNED TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER FROM THE MAIN STAGE TO THE FIRST EVER DOWNTOWN PLAYGROUND AND NEW PICKLEBALL COURTS. MAY WILL BE A SOFT OPENING PERIOD. THAT’S WHEN THE FENCING WILL BE REMOVED AND LANDSCAPING TOUCHES WILL BE COMPLETED IN JUNE. THE DOLLAR BANK THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL WILL SERVE AS THE GRAND OPENING. THEN IN JULY, THE PICKLEBALL COURTS WILL BE COMPLETED. THIS IS THE DESIGN WE EXPECT TO SEE ONCE IT’S ALL DONE AND THROUGHOUT THE FOUR ACRE SPACE, YOU’LL SEE ART INSTALLATIONS BY LOCAL ARTISTS. THIS ONE, TITLED THIS IS THE BODY OF THE SUN, TELLING A STORY OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY BEING BORN AND RAISED HERE IN PITTSBURGH. IT’S. AND COMING FROM AN AFRICAN BACKGROUND, IT’S REALLY AN HONOR TO BE ABLE TO SHARE IN PITTSBURGH. ASPECTS OF AFRICAN HISTORY, AFRICAN MYTHOLOGY. WE WANT IT TO BE AN INSPIRATION TO THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH. WE WANT PEOPLE TO SHINE. LET YOUR LIGHT OUT. SHARE YOUR TALENT WITH THE COMMUNITY ARTS LANDING JUST ONE PART OF THE ONGOING REVITALIZATION OF DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH. DONE IN TIME FOR THE DRAFT. WE’VE INVESTED $62.6 MILLION IN THIS EFFORT. A Pittsburgh tradition returns this weekend, with a new downtown home.

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival kicks off Friday at Arts Landing, the newest civic space in downtown Pittsburgh. The festival runs through the weekend, and from June 11-14.

Musical headliners include Spin Doctors, The Pharcyde, Joan Osborne and Delfeayo Marsalis.

The Rachel Carson Bridge and most of Fort Duquesne Boulevard will be closed for the entirety of the festival.
