DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Firefighters in Dickson City spent part of Thursday afternoon rescuing a young deer that became trapped beneath a large rock in a narrow groundhog hole.

According to the Dickson City Fire Department, crews responded to an animal rescue call after a fawn was discovered stuck underground and unable to free itself.

Firefighters used specialized rescue techniques and worked alongside several partner agencies during the operation. Officials said the fawn was pinned beneath a large rock, making the rescue especially challenging.

After a coordinated effort, firefighters successfully freed the animal from the hole.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission and Dickson City Department of Public Works assisted with the rescue. Once the fawn was extricated, it was turned over to a state game warden for evaluation and care.

Fire department officials said the fawn had likely been trapped for an extended period of time, leaving its long-term survival uncertain.

“We are committed to caring for all lives, great and small,” the department said in a statement.
