An 80-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening trying to cross a busy Bethlehem intersection, city police said.
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Daniel A. Bayak.
Bayak was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg in Bethlehem. He died from multiple blunt force injuries and the manner was ruled accidental by Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio.
Police Chief Michelle Kott said officers were dispatched just after 8:15 p.m. to Linden Street and Butztown Road. Investigators found Bayak lying unresponsive in the southbound lane of Linden Street, the police chief said.
Officers, along with emergency medical technicians and firefighters, immediately performed life-saving measures, she said. Bayak was then taken to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the crash scene and is cooperating fully with the investigation, police said. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed, city police said.
Witnesses told police Bayak was struck while attempting to cross at the south end of Linden Street and Butztown Road. That location, city police said, is not designated as a crosswalk and is posted with “No Crossing” signs.
Witness statements and initial findings also indicate the vehicle had a “steady green signal” at the time of the crash, Kott said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Bethlehem Police Department’s Major Accident Reconstruction Team and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensic Center.
Police are still looking for witnesses. Those with more information are asked to email the Bethlehem Police Traffic Unit at policetraffic@bethlehem-pa.gov.
