“Dogfight,” a musical drama about young Marines during the Vietnam War, is on stage this weekend and next as part of the Standard Theatre Company’s inaugural season.
Performers from across Northeast Pennsylvania are part of one of the first full-scale productions by the newly formed arts organization.
Active military members and veterans can buy half-price tickets.
Set on Nov. 21, 1963, “Dogfight” follows a group of young Marines determined to spend one final night of freedom before deployment.
It is based on a 1991 movie and is written by Tony Award-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the team behind “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Greatest Showman.”
“This is a tender but brutal story of young people standing at a crossroads,” said Mandy Bruno Bogue, director of the production. “At its heart, ‘Dogfight’ asks us to look beyond first impressions and recognize the humanity in one another. It’s funny, heartbreaking and incredibly relevant, especially in a world where empathy can sometimes feel in short supply.”

Cast members shaved their heads and donated the hair to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit that uses human hair to create mats and booms that help absorb oil spills and protect waterways around the world.
