PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — “Victory in Philly” is the initiative of local basketball enthusiast, Mike Morak, to teach kids how to shoot for success.

Their free basketball camps provide them with opportunities to hone their skills and find a hobby that could improve their futures.

Each student goes home with a free basketball, something they can use to continue practicing, or give to someone in their neighborhood to pass it forward.

“I hope in the next couple of weeks…the Spalding basketballs are bouncing around the city of Philadelphia. And I think that’s what the win is,” said Morak.

Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson was present to boost the kids’ spirits and support the mission.

“We know that when our young people get involved in things that are positive, there’s opportunities for them to grow and develop,” said Council President Johnson.

Their most recent camp took place at the Vare Recreation Center.

The Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Flyers have also contributed to the funding of the program over the years.

“It’s allowing them to see…how you can be successful both on and off the basketball court and really kind of see themselves in the people who are providing the instruction,” said David Gould, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer with the Philadelphia 76ers.
