A wildfire on a military base in New Jersey was being noticed far away in the Lehigh Valley on Monday evening.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, posted on its Facebook page that east winds were blowing smoke from the fire, which was reported at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst near Trenton, westward into eastern Pennsylvania.
According to AirNow.gov, the air quality index over a large portion of the eastern Lehigh Valley — including Bethlehem and Easton — was in the yellow, or moderate range, as of 9 p.m. Moderate air quality indicates an index between 51 and 100.
While air quality in that range is acceptable to most people, those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution could be at risk, according to AirNow.gov.
Around 3:30 p.m., a post on the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Facebook page indicated that the fire, located within the perimeter of the military base, was contained.
“Wildland crews are implementing back fire strategies to ensure the fire remains in place and reduce the risk of spread,” the post read in part.
The fire did not threaten any buildings or require any evacuations, according to the post.
