A man is facing serious charges after police reportedly found a missing girl in a box inside a Pittsburgh home.
A criminal complaint says Pittsburgh police received reports of a juvenile missing from Louisiana on Thursday.
The U.S. Marshals Service determined the girl was possibly located at a home in the 1200 block of Davis Avenue.
Pittsburgh SWAT executed a search warrant at the home, where they found the girl in a sheet-covered box in the basement, records say.
The girl told police that she and Ki-Shawn Crumity, 26, of Pittsburgh, met over the social media platform Snapchat. Crumity allegedly told the girl that he would get her adopted by a trusted adult.
While at a Greyhound bus station in Washington, D.C., the girl met a woman who asked if she was alright, records say. The girl said yes and that she was going to Pittsburgh.
The girl called Crumity and told him she was bringing a friend, and the woman said they would go together, records say.
When they arrived at the Davis Avenue home, the girl and the woman slept in the same bed with Crumity, records say. Crumity allegedly gave the girl alcohol and edibles on her first day there.
The girl claimed Crumity sexually assaulted her once or twice a day during the approximate week she was at the home.
When interviewed, Crumity reportedly admitted to sexually assaulting the girl on multiple occasions.
Online court records show Crumity is charged with trafficking in individuals, selling or furnishing alcohol and multiple sex-related charges.
Crumity is being held in the Allegheny County Jail. He has been denied bail.
In a release on Friday, the U.S. Marshals Service provided more details about the search for the missing girl, who they say is 13 years old.
The USMS was requested to assist with the case on Sunday. Investigators learned that the missing girl may have been in contact with an unknown man online.
On Monday, police arrested a 62-year-old man in New Orleans for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. Investigators reportedly learned during an interview that the man was with the girl at a Greyhound bus station in Baton Rouge, La.
Investigators found that the girl was with another person. The USMS says Ronald Smith, 62, was arrested in Columbus, Ga., for simple kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
On Thursday, the girl was reportedly found in the Pittsburgh home.
“We heard a flashbang,” Heitor Tavares said. He lives just a few doors down from the home on Davis Avenue where the girl was being held.
Investigators say she was found with a woman and a man.
“We saw a plethora of police cars, S.W.A.T., F.B.I., U.S. Marshals, Pittsburgh Police, the works,” he said.
Video shared by another neighbor shows a massive police presence at the home.
“We saw a very young girl, 12, 13, being taken out of the house by a couple of policemen and another guy being brought into a police car,” Tavares said.
Channel 11 knocked on the door but no one answered.
The girl is believed to have traveled on a bus from Columbus, Ga., to Pittsburgh, the USMS says. She was taken to a hospital after the arrest.
According to police, when they interviewed her, she told them that being at the hospital was “the safest she ever felt.”
“I’m glad they caught the guy. It’s tragic, horrible. It’s pretty surreal seeing it,” neighbor Dale Kuntzman said.
Crumity is facing a number of charges including trafficking. So far, he’s the only one who has been charged despite others being named in the complaint.
Neighbors say they are still trying to wrap their heads around the whole thing.
“There were always two guys sitting there. They were always ‘hey, how are you? How are you doing?’ We were shocked when we found out. It’s quite appalling, really,” Tavares said.
The investigation is ongoing, with more arrests pending and charges expected, the USMS says.
