I read in the June 1 Reading Eagle that the Reading School Board has proposed a tax increase on city property owners (“Proposed $516.7 million budget OK’d”). With all this talk of affordability crises, I have an idea to raise money and not subject the citizens of Reading to more burdensome taxes.
Simply place police officers at Second and Washington streets and at Schuylkill Avenue and Washington Street. Write tickets for moving violations, failure to stop at stop signs and red lights and speeding down Washington Street.
This could be a goldmine for the city, especially between 6 and 9 a.m. I believe the city could see a surplus of money within a year and then transfer it to the school district to pay for teachers’ health care, salary and retirement plans. Or imagine if the citizens could keep that money and use it for their own health care and retirement.
