A 74-year-old Carbondale man is accused of exposing himself on the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail on Sunday.
At about 6 p.m., Carbondale officers responded to the report of an intoxicated male behaving inappropriately near the intersection of Brooklyn Street and Seventh Avenue.
According to the criminal complaint, officers found William Mahon, of 61 Spring St., sitting alongside the trail with an open can of Mad Dog wine, listening to music.
Police found four empty cans of the wine nearby.
Officers noted the trail is a walking/biking path open to the public.
When Mahon stood up, officers could see his genitals. When police asked Mahon why his private area was exposed, he said it wasn’t.
Mahon’s speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet, officers noted.
He allegedly admitted to having been drinking in the area.
Officers then spoke with two female witnesses who had reported Mahon.
They said they had been walking home from Weis Markets and sat down on a bench on the Heritage Trail. Mahon walked up to them and made inappropriate comments.
Mahon briefly left the area, but soon returned with an open wine container. The females said Mahon wanted them to listen to him sing and pushed their items off the bench, attempting to sit down next to them.
When the females told Mahon they were only 16, he responded, “No, no, no. I’m going to sing to you.”
It was then the females noticed Mahon’s genitals were exposed, called 911 and moved away from him to wait for police.
Mahon faces charges of indecent exposure and public drunkeness.
He remains in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $3,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on June 17 before District Judge George Seig.
