Philadelphia’s comedy community will come together this Saturday to celebrate the official designation of the 2000 block of Sansom Street as “Philly’s Funniest Block.”
The free community celebration will feature comedy, family-friendly activities, prizes, special promotions from local businesses, and opportunities to connect with the four comedy organizations that call the area home: ComedySportz, Helium Comedy Club, MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company, and SideQuest Theater.
The festivities are set to begin Saturday, June 13, at 5:30 p.m. with a Ribbon Cutting and City Citation Ceremony featuring remarks from City Councilmember At-Large Rue Landau. Keeping the neighborhood’s comedic spirit in mind, participants will don Groucho glasses as a giant ribbon stretched across the block will be ceremonially cut with a classic rubber chicken.
Throughout the evening, visitors can check out information tables hosted by each comedy venue, where representatives will share details about upcoming classes, workshops, and performances. Guests can also enjoy SWAG giveaways, enter to win free tickets and discounts, and experience interactive sidewalk entertainment, including a multi-headed Oracle offering humorous predictions, close-up card tricks from a comedian, and other pop-up experiences.
Families are welcome at the celebration as well: MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company will host improv and theater games for children and teens inside its venue, while visitors of all ages can take part in the Laugh Track Scavenger Hunt. With Laugh Track, family-friendly jokes and puns about Philadelphia will be displayed in the windows of 20 participating businesses and restaurants throughout the area, and guests who find them all will have the chance to win prizes.
Participating businesses and venues will also offer exclusive promotions tied to the celebration. ComedySportz will offer tickets to its 7 p.m. performance for $17.76, and SideQuest Theater will offer tickets to its 9 p.m. performance for the same price. MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company will additionally provide a $17.76 discount on Fall improv classes for ages 7–17, and Helium Comedy Club will offer $25 gift cards for just $17.76. Visitors can access participating offers by using the promotional code “PHILLYSFUNNIESTBLOCK” on participating theater websites as well.
“Philly’s Funniest represents the best of what arts and culture bring to our city. Comedy fuels connection, supports our nighttime economy, and helps create the vibrant, welcoming energy that makes Philadelphia an exciting destination for visitors,” says Landau. “With America’s 250th underway, this citation lets both newcomers and locals know that we celebrate our artists, and there’s always a night of fun waiting for them on Sansom Street, Philly’s Funniest Block.”
