AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo City Council approved an ordinance adopting budget amendments for the 2024-25 budget for the general fund at the department level.
The amendments will account for actual funds spent that exceeded the amount set for each department.
At the city council meeting, city staff presented which departments were over on the general fund.
General Fund:
Police – $2,887,800 (Paid out more in labor than budgeted)Fire – $1,839,300 (Paid out more in labor than budgeted)Capital Projects and Development – $154,600 (Paid out more in labor than budgeted)Golf – $214,800 (Paid out more in supplies for ground care than budgeted)Library – $33,500 (Paid out more in labor than budgeted)Transit – $227,000 (Paid out more in labor than budgeted)
Officials said the reason for the bookkeeping changes is to clearly state the financial policies in a way that is easy to understand.
“We have all looked at our financial policies to see, you know, there’s ambiguous language in them so we want to just sharpen it up so that it says what it says and means what it says,” said Don Tipps, councilmember for the city of Amarillo. “So we’re just trying to be true to that and where we find any discrepancies we’re just trying to clean it up.”
Once a second reading is done, this approval will become an attachment to the original budget.
A second reading will be held on June 23 for final approval of this ordinance.
