A Mexican man who is a registered sex offender who illegally re-entered the United States after his deportation in 2007 is back in federal custody, U.S. Attorney David Metcalf announced Wednesday.
According to a release from Metcalf’s office:
Gilberto Martinez Geronimo, 52, had been illegally residing in Upper Darby until his arrest on May 19.
Martinez Geronimo was convicted in New Jersey on charges of aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and a diseased person committing an act of sexual penetration in February 2001.
Martinez Geronimo was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was released into the custody of federal immigration officials in January 2007 and deported to Mexico that same month.
Martinez Geronimo illegally reentered the country in approximately May 2021 and had been staying in Upper Darby until his arrest last month.
He is charged by federal indictment with failure to register as a sex offender and unlawfully re-entering the country without applying for or receiving the U.S. government’s permission.
Martinez Geronimo remains in custody and faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted on the new charges.
