SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A man wanted on murder and firearms charges in Virginia was arrested Thursday in Scranton after police say he fled from officers investigating inappropriate contact with a juvenile.

According to the Scranton Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit, officers began investigating after observing a man engaging in inappropriate contact with a juvenile female near the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Birch Street.

When officers attempted to speak with him, the man fled on foot, police said. Officers pursued the suspect and deployed Tasers during the chase before taking him into custody in the 800 block of Pittston Avenue.

Police said the suspect initially refused to cooperate with investigators, declined to identify himself and refused to be fingerprinted.

The Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office approved charges including unlawful contact with a minor, evading arrest on foot, obstruction of administration of law, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Authorities said the man was arraigned and remanded to the Lackawanna County Prison without bail.

Later Thursday, officials at the Lackawanna County Processing Center were able to identify the suspect through fingerprinting as Nagee Sumler, 19, of Virginia.

According to police, investigators then discovered Sumler was wanted by the Henrico County Police Division in Virginia on outstanding charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police said the warrant was issued Feb. 16, 2026.

After confirming the warrant and extradition request with Virginia authorities, Scranton police filed an amended criminal complaint adding a charge of fugitive from justice.

Sumler remains incarcerated in Lackawanna County pending further court proceedings.
