SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Johnson College has received a grant aimed at helping Wayne County residents pursue technical education and workforce training opportunities.

The Scranton-based college announced it was awarded $6,000 through the Wayne County Community Foundation’s spring grant cycle to support participants in its Readiness in Skilled Employment (RISE) program.

According to the college, the funding will help an eligible Wayne County resident cover tuition and other educational expenses, including technology, personal protective equipment, tools and support services designed to remove barriers to completing training.

The RISE program serves residents across nine counties in northeastern Pennsylvania, including Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

Program leaders say RISE is designed to address challenges that often prevent people from enrolling in or finishing technical education programs, including transportation issues, childcare needs, housing instability and food insecurity.

The initiative aims to connect participants with training that leads to in-demand careers while helping employers address workforce shortages throughout the region.

The Wayne County Community Foundation provides grants, scholarships and other funding opportunities to support nonprofit organizations and community programs throughout Wayne County.
