A poetry tradition rooted in Erie’s east side brought neighbors together once again, celebrating the legacy of two beloved Benedictine sisters and the park they helped inspire.
The outdoor space was created by the late poet and Benedictine Sister Mary Lou Kownacki, just steps from her childhood home.
The event was hosted by Northwest Pennsylvania Poetry with Mary Allen Dahlkemper.
Neighbors say the park still reflects the spirit of Sister Mary Lou and Sister Mary Miller — two women long known for their work strengthening this block. Today, organizers continued that mission with “Poetry in Poetry Park,” featuring local poets and an open mic for anyone who wanted to share their voice.
“Well, poetry is just a very rewarding and popular art form for a lot of people in the area. It’s very well represented, and to have an outdoor venue to do that — it’s important to use it,” said Chuck Joy, a representative for NWPA Poetry.
Organizers say they hope to continue hosting more events in the park as revitalization efforts in the neighborhood move forward.
