SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY(WBRE/WYOU) — American history has taken its place at Steamtown in Scranton and has done so in Epic proportions.

“It was just an amazing, iconic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to see this massive American power,” said Jeremy Komaz, Superintendent at Steamtown Historical Site.

The Union Pacific 4014, also known as the Big Boy 4014, has made a stop in Scranton as part of America’s 250th anniversary. The locomotive was restored in 2019 and is the only engine of its kind that is in full operation.

Changes were made to the machine to make it operational. Those include being powered by used motor oil, having an added water reserve, and having added safety mechanisms.

“But beyond that, it is very much what you would have seen in 1941 when this thing rolled off the factory plant in Schenectady, New York,” said Robbynn Tysver, Corporate Communications with Union Pacific.

Another aspect of being in Scranton is the chance for 4014 to be next to 4012, Steamtown’s resident Big Boy and brother to 4014. With only eight left in the county, this makes it one of the first times that two engines of its kind will sit side by side.

 Borough updates rules for data centers 

“Just the amount of folks coming to the park, whether they are rail fans already or becoming rail fans because of this journey, is a sight to see,” said Megan Stevens, Gateway Community Coordinator, Steamtown Historical Site.

The Big Boy will remain at Steamtown, not moving from its current spot, for the next two weeks.

“Well, we are gearing up for that. We are excited about the 4th of July celebration, celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday. But what we are really excited about is seeing the people,” said Ed Dickens, senior manager of heritage operations with Union Pacific and one of the operators of the Big Boy 4014.

From here, it will take its next stop in Philadelphia for America’s birthday.
