Tensions remain high at Erie City Hall following a contentious City Council meeting that sparked debate over comments made by a council member toward the council president.
Much of the discussion centers on remarks made by Councilman Ed Brzezinski during a previous council meeting, when he referred to Council President Tyler Titus as “ma’am.”
Titus, who uses they/them pronouns, said the comment was disrespectful and raised concerns about professionalism and respect among elected officials.
The issue drew significant attention during Wednesday night’s council meeting, where residents and council members weighed in on the controversy. The discussion highlighted broader conversations about respect, inclusion, and conduct within local government.
Speaking about the incident, Titus said the remarks were hurtful and emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting individuals’ identities.
The debate continues as city leaders and community members discuss the role of civility and mutual respect in public service. Further discussion on the matter is expected as council members move forward with future meetings.
