Jen Lewis scored on a penalty stroke with seven minutes remaining to lift Lackawanna Trail over Montrose in the District 12 field hockey championship game and give Lady Lions coach Sandy Spott her 100th victory. Goalie Toby Wilmet made 12 saves, including stopping two penalty strokes in the first half. Laura Fitzpatrick scored Trail’s other goal three minutes into the second half to tie the game, 1-1. … Damon Verton scored four touchdowns and ran for 221 yards to become the school’s first 2,000-yard rusher (2,013) as Western Wayne topped Montrose, 28-6, to grab a share of its first Suburban Conference title. It also gave the Wildcats the District 12 Class AA crown. … Following a 22-12 win over Lakeland, Nick Donato announced his resignation as North Pocono head football coach after 15 years and 111 wins. … At the PIAA Cross Country Championships at Penn State University, Corey Smith of Wallenpaupack finished second in the Class AAA boys race and teammate Matt Dunn was 10th, helping the Buckhorns place fourth in the team standings. Tom Zukoski of Scranton Prep finished 11th. In Class AAA girls, Lisa Roder took third. Rebecca Mack of Wilkes-Barre GAR won the Class AA girls title.

Austin Clark scored in overtime off a perfectly executed corner kick to give North Pocono a 2-1 win over Dallas in the District 2 Class AA boys soccer final at Scranton Memorial Stadium. … Delaware Valley raced to a three-goal lead in the first half on two scores by Pat Smith and one by Keith Frischie, then withstood a Wyoming Valley West comeback bid in the second half to win the District 2 Class AAA boys soccer final, 3-2. It is the Warriors’ first District 2 title and 13th district crown in school history. … John Russell was named manager of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, succeeding Gene Lamont. … Scranton Prep bunched its top five runners within 38 seconds of each other to total 138 points and win the Class AA boys title at the PIAA Cross Country Championships at Hersheypark Stadium’s White Field. It was the Cavaliers’ second straight state title and fifth in six years, but first under head coach Mike Ludka. Shamus McGuigan was top finisher for Scranton Prep in 28th place. Four area boys runners earned individual state medals: Lakeland’s Mark Bucklaw (seventh), Kyle Pepson (24th) and Bishop O’Hara’s Mike May (16th) in Class AA and Wallenpaupack’s Kevin Sives (14th) in Class AAA. … Mia Collarini’s goal off an assist from Katie Mattise with 27 minutes left gave Valley View a 1-0 win over Lakeland in the District 2 Class AA girls soccer final.

Megan Houlihan led the Lady Raiders with six kills and nine digs. … Delaware Valley captured its sixth straight District 2 Class AAA girls volleyball title with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 victory over Wyoming Valley West.
