UPDATE: Northampton County Coroner Zach Lysek says the cause of death is smoke inhalation from the fire. The investigation is ongoing. 

BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. – A fatal crash shut down a road in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County for hours Friday morning.

Around 4 a.m., a vehicle headed west on Freemansburg Avenue went off the road, rolled, hit a tree and caught fire, said township police Chief Dan Pancoast.

It happened near the intersection with Farmersville Road.

The driver was killed, and the county coroner was called to the scene, police said.

Investigators are working to figure out what caused the crash. Police are asking any person or business who may have video of Freemansburg Avenue from Wilson Borough to Farmersville Road from 3:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. to contact Investigator Fox at 610.419.9646 or email efox@bethlehemtwp.com.
