HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — Legislation will be introduced in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that intends to address hate through funding for educational programs.
In a memo circulated to House members, State Rep. Tarik Khan, along with Reps. Ben Waxman and Mary Jo Daley, argue that a “Holocaust and Anti-Hate Education Grant Program” within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is needed to help organizations and institutions address and prevent hate through art, education and community engagement.
“The program would provide grants of $500 to $10,000 to museums, cultural institutions, libraries, community organizations and schools to support Holocaust education, instruction on religious, racial and ethnic persecution, and/or anti-hate education initiatives that strengthen respect, civility and peace in our communities,” according to the memo.
A troubling rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of hate, the Reps argue, demonstrates the need for organizations and institutions that play a vital role in educating the public about the religious, racial and ethnic persecution, such as the Holocaust, as well as fostering respect and civility in our communities.

The memo emphasizes the importance of this funding to support organizations that educate, engage and combat hate.
