The man who was shot by police during a road rage incident in Bensalem on Saturday, Aug. 2, and faced a number of other criminal charges, including for a separate road rage incident on on July 27, has been given $1,000,000 bail by a judge on Wednesday.
John Mathis, 44, was shot during a road rage incident that began on Saturday at around 5:45 p.m., when police got a call of a man on a motorcycle threatening a man and a woman inside a car with a handgun.
After a police officer intervened, Mathis fled on foot and at some point turned toward the officer while still holding a handgun, forcing the officer to fire shots at Mathis.
Police later identified Mathis as the man who was shot and said he was someone previously called a “habitual offender” who has had frequent contact with police.
Mathis had two warrants for his arrest at the time of the shooting.
One arrest warrant was for a road rage incident in Bristol Borough on July 27, 205, and the second was for violating the conditions of his release pending trial for other charges, including removing his GPS monitor.
Police are still investigating after a man, who officials said was holding a gun while riding a motorcycle, was shot by an officer in Bensalem on Saturday. NBC10’s Neil Fischer has the latest details.
Wednesday’s bail decision was made during an arraignment for charges stemming from the July 27 incident. The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office says that Mathis also remains in custody due to the two warrants issued for his arrest.
Mathis remains in custody in Bucks County on Wednesday and must post 10% of his $1,000,000 bail to be released on the July 27 charges.
Additionally, the D.A.’s office says charges are expected to be filed for the Aug. 2 incident as well.
Online court records didn’t have a lawyer for Mathis immediately available for comment.
