PITTSBURGH, PA — With the Thanksgiving holiday a little more than a month away, people might already be planning their menus.

The centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal most often is, of course, turkey. But according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, it also is the most expensive food on the table – accounting for 44 percent of the total amount spent on a traditional Thanksgiving menu in 2024.

But last year, more than 380,000 Giant Eagle customers earned a free turkey through the grocery store chain’s free turkey program. The initiative is returning again this year.

Here’s how to get your free turkey:

Shop at Giant Eagle from October 16 through November 6; all eligible purchases made in this time frame will help customers earn their turkey. Customers who spend at least $350 will be entitled to a free Giant Eagle frozen turkey of any size. Once a customer hits the $350 spend threshold, a free turkey can be redeemed in the next transaction from October 16 through November 30. The same Giant Eagle Loyalty Card must be used for each qualifying transaction. Progress toward a free turkey will be shown on receipts, and it can be tracked in the Giant Eagle app.

This year, customers who earn a free turkey will have the option to donate the value of their turkey. Once a free turkey is earned, customers can donate online or through the Giant Eagle app, by visiting the Guest Service Desk, or by calling Giant Eagle Customer Care. Giant Eagle will donate the value of each earned and donated turkey, up to $100,000, to local food banks.
