The Pennsylvania House of Representatives adopted a resolution (H.R. 355) sponsored by state Rep. Jim Haddock, D-118, Pittston Twp., to commemorate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, which is celebrated on Nov. 10.
The resolution recognizes the historic ties between Pennsylvania and the Marine Corps, noting that the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines on Nov. 10, 1775. The first recruiting headquarters was established by Capt. Samuel Nicholas at the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia. Following the Revolutionary War, the Marine Corps was formally established in 1798, and the Marine Corps Reserve was later founded in 1916.
“It is fitting that we celebrate the vast achievements and sacrifices of the United States Marine Corps, and the role of Pennsylvania in the history of the Marines,” said Haddock, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
Haddock highlighted the service of approximately 175,000 active-duty Marines and 33,000 reserve members who uphold the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the nation.
“We thank the Marines and all branches of the military for their dedication to our country and our security,” Haddock said. “We also recognize the sacrifices that their families must endure during their loved ones’ deployment overseas.”
Pennsylvania is home to a significant veteran population, with nearly 700,000 veterans residing in the state, one of the largest populations in the nation.
