BENSALEM, Pa. (WPVI) — The motorcyclist who was shot by a police officer during a confrontation that followed a road rage incident in Bensalem, Bucks County, is now out of the hospital.
John Mathis, 44, is now being held on $1 million bail on charges stemming from a separate road rage incident that happened in Bristol Township on July 27.
Bristol police had an active warrant for Mathis for an incident in which he allegedly used a baseball bat to smash a car’s windshield.
Charges for Saturday’s incident in Bensalem are still pending.
Investigators say Mathis pointed a gun at people in a car around 5:45 p.m., then followed them down Bristol Pike.
Video obtained by Action News shows the officer arriving on the scene and positioning the cruiser between the victim’s car and the motorcycle.
Police say Mathis slammed his motorcycle into the side of the police cruiser, then fled on foot while armed with a handgun.
Police say Mathis did not comply with commands, and a veteran officer opened fire.
Mathis has several other arrests dating back to 2001.
