As Erie prepares for a busy stretch of America250 and PA250 celebrations, city officials are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead for significant traffic changes and heavy crowds along the waterfront during the July 4 holiday week.
With major events scheduled—including the return of the U.S. Brig Niagara on July 2 and fireworks on July 3—road closures and construction will heavily impact travel in the Bayfront and downtown areas.
State Street will remain closed as part of ongoing construction tied to the Bayfront Parkway project. Pedestrians heading to waterfront events are advised to cross the Parkway only at Holland Street, Sassafras Street, or other designated crossings, and to stay on sidewalks for safety.
City leaders emphasize that both foot and vehicle traffic will increase significantly during event days, making early arrival essential.
The $45 million Bayfront Parkway construction project remains underway, with crews working toward a redesigned roadway that will route east-west traffic underneath the State Street intersection. The project also includes new on- and off-ramps to improve access to Erie’s waterfront.
Despite progress and the presence of numerous construction workers on-site, current detours will remain in place throughout the holiday events. Officials note that the State Street construction zone will be secured to ensure public safety during large gatherings.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah is encouraging the public to prepare for delays and limited parking.
“It’s going to be congested. It’s going to be a tough time finding parking,” Lorah said, noting that the city is working to ease the burden through expanded park-and-ride options and continuous shuttle service.
“As long as you leave enough time to get down there, I think everything will be okay,” he added.
