SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was a nice day for an annual fundraising run that will help feed thousands of families in need. Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) held its 16th Annual Turkey Trot 5K/10K run on Sunday morning.
The event also featured a tiny trot and various activities for kids.
Proceeds from the run benefit this year’s family-to-family holiday food basket giveaway.
The need is especially great given that SNAP benefits are currently in limbo because of the government shutdown.

“We are thankful that the students have come to us every year and have wanted to support the events or programs that we have at Catherine McAuley Center, Friends of the Poor, and Family to Family. And it shows their commitment and the community’s commitment to help others,” Ann Williams with Friends of the Poor and Catherine McAuley Center told 28/22 News.
“It’s fun seeing everyone in all their turkey gear. We had some classmates in, like, a full turkey onesie and with different hats. I got this from one of my classmates so everyone’s in the spirit,” GCSOM Student and runner Matthew Morris stated.
This year’s turkey trot supports the Family to Family Food Basket Program for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Groceries will be given to 4,000 families in need.
