James P. Flannery
OBITUARY
Mr. James P. Flannery, of Peckville, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 24th, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He is survived by his wife, Rita Pilch Flannery.
Born in West Side, Scranton, James grew up as a multi-sport athlete attending St. Anne’s High School. Following graduation, he played as a decorated pitcher in the semi-pro Scranton Baseball League. During his time serving in the U.S. Army, he also played baseball in the European League in France. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 665, Dickson City.
Following his time in the Army, James served as the Athletics Director of the West Side Boys Club, Sociotherapy Director and Director of Summer Camp Programs for the Friendship House, and Executive Director of the Catholic Youth Center in Scranton. He then worked for the Pennsylvania State Corrections Halfway Program and served as the Manager of the Catholic Social Services Halfway Program until retirement.
James was a member of the Church of The Visitation of The Blessed Virgin Mary in Dickson City.
He is preceded in death by his daughters, Rebecca and Erin Flannery, his parents, Francis and Katherine McNerney Flannery, and his brothers, Joe, Robert, Jean and Jerry Flannery and brother-in-law Walter Yankovich.
James is survived by his children, James and wife Cheryl Flannery, Patrick and wife Carolyn Flannery and Kelli and husband John Vachino. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Kendra and Max Srebro, James Flannery (Samantha), Christine Reitz (Matthew), Bridget Flannery (Joe) and Molly Flannery (Matt), and Sydney, Gianna, and John Roman Vachino, and great-grandchildren, Hailey and James Flannery. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Rosemary Pilch Yankovich and brother-in-law Raymond and wife Andrea Pilch as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in honor of James will be held on Saturday, June 27th at St. Mary’s Visitation Church at 10:00 a.m. Entombment with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dickson City. The family will accept visitors at the Frank T.
