SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Mayor Paige Cognetti is proposing more than $1.1 million in additional investments aimed at expanding public safety technology, enhancing police operations and supporting the city’s fire department.
The proposal, which will be introduced to Scranton City Council on June 30, consists of two companion pieces of legislation that would fund several capital projects, including the creation of a Real Time Crime Center for the Scranton Police Department.
Cognetti said the investments are intended to strengthen public safety while providing officers with additional technology and resources.
“Our investment in a Real Time Crime Center in downtown Scranton will provide the brave men and women at SPD with even greater resources they need to help keep our community safe,” Cognetti said in a statement.
Police Chief Thomas Carroll said the crime center would improve the department’s readiness and response capabilities while enhancing officer safety.
Under the first proposal, the city would close three special city accounts totaling nearly $191,000 and repurpose more than $175,000 in accumulated interest from another special fund. The combined total of more than $366,000 would be used to purchase additional surveillance cameras and upgrade police department operations.
The second measure would amend the city’s 2026 capital budget by increasing revenues and expenditures by approximately $1.09 million. The funding would come from the repurposed special city funds, Community Development Block Grant funding and other city sources.
If approved, the city would use the money to pay off the remaining lease on the Scranton Fire Department’s Rescue 1 vehicle, eliminating future interest payments, and purchase the property at 334-336 N. Washington Ave. for the development of the Real Time Crime Center. City officials said the property would also house other municipal operations and improve accessibility for residents in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The proposals will be considered by Scranton City Council during its June 30 meeting.
