The City of Erie is reviewing a June 28th police encounter captured on video during a pursuit.
The footage has sparked community concerns, and city officials say any use of force is taken seriously.
Police say an officer spotted Kevin James Sparks, 41, who had outstanding warrants, riding an e-bike in the 800 block of East 24th Street. Officers pursued him to the 2300 block of Wallace Street, where he was taken into custody. Sparks had two prior warrants with the Erie Police Department for theft and criminal trespass, as well as an additional warrant from the Erie County and Venango County Sheriff’s Departments.
Sparks now faces new charges, including fleeing police, resisting arrest, and drug possession. He is being held in Erie County Prison on $5,000 bond and remains on hold for Venango County.
The investigation into the incident includes reviewing body camera footage, witness accounts, and other evidence to ensure fairness and transparency. If any policies were violated, city officials say appropriate action will be taken.
