Cooling centers open in South-Central Pennsylvania as heat wave looms
GKL News storm team forecast with meteorologist Mary Ellen Pan. Great advice for sure. All right, as we check out the weather headlines, uh, we hit 90 today. It’s going to turn even hotter tomorrow, but the scorching heat will arrive on Wednesday. That’s why we’ve made it an alert day. In fact, we have an alert day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday because of heat index values exceeding, uh, 105 possible. Few of the scattered storms will move back into the picture towards the end of the week. That’s when we see our chances in. Increasing heat alerts right now. You can see *** heat advisory in the western portion of the state for us, us here locally, we do have an extreme heat watch that goes into effect at 12 noon on Wednesday, and that will continue until 8:00 p.m. on Friday. And that’s because of the possibility of triple digit heat in the sea values. 106 is what it’ll feel like, uh, or even hotter on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, even Saturday with. Temperatures in the low to mid 90s, it could feel like it’s over 100 degrees. So this, uh, heat is gonna be with us for much of the upcoming week. Let’s talk about the records because we, the, uh, numbers that are highlighted are the records that are at least 1 or 2 degrees with it or forecast I should say within 1 or 2 degrees of the record. So we have the potential to actually reach those record numbers, tying or breaking. And you can also see look how warm it’s going to be in the overnight period. We’re forecasting temperatures in the upper 70s, so we’re not going to get much relief overnight in the overnight periods. Uh, on Wednesday we have *** forecast of 98. The record is 100. We also have, uh, the forecast of 100 on Thursday, and you can see the record there was 104 set back in 1966. And the last time we did hit 100 degrees it was back in 2024 on July 16th. So it’s been *** while. Evening temperatures are going to be quite warm, uh, in the mid 80s and winds are on the calm side. We’ll see those clouds decreasing. We’ll end up with partly cloudy to mostly clear conditions. There may be some patchy fog or *** little haziness. It will be muggy. Temperatures right around 70 tomorrow. Partly sunny, hot and humid. Temperatures are in the low 90s for tomorrow. In your weather and health check, pollen level, grass is high, mold is moderate, air quality is moderate, and check out the UV index. Burn time of 15. Minutes, so very high. Definitely want to make sure you have that sunscreen on if you’re going to be spending time outdoors. 90 degrees right now here in Harrisburg or in Harrisburg. We have 87 in Lancaster, 91 in Gettysburg, 8088 in Lewistown. Just jumped up there as I was talking, 89 in Lebanon as I zoom out though, you can see the 90s that are off to the west. This is *** ridge of high pressure. This is going to push eastward and this large heat dome will set up over top of us starting on Wednesda. Day, uh, we’re going to be right in the bull’s eye, and that’s why we anticipate these hot temperatures, and we’ve been talking about this since last week, so giving you plenty of heads up for sure. Tem dew point temperatures are in the low 60s. We’re going to see these numbers climbing into the 70s starting Wednesday through much of the upcoming week. It’s quiet out there right now. We had that stray shower chance. I think that chance is very slim, mostly dry for the evening. High pressure to our north. We’ve still had winds coming in out of the east, southeast, but those. Winds are going to shift, uh, as the high pressure system moves down to the southeast. So here’s *** look at predictor Flow will start to turn more to the south-southeast tomorrow. That’s going to help boost those temperatures. Watching *** little cluster of storms that should weaken as they move south, but maybe clip, uh, portions of Dauphin and Lebanon. That chance is very low, but we’ll keep you posted on that. Otherwise it’s dry. Wednesday is looking hot and very humid, uh, very uncomfortable for sure as we take *** quick look at your weekend. Planner, we have made 4th of July an impact day because of hot temperatures and, uh, feeling even hotter than that 94 plus we’re tracking the threat for those storms. Quick look at your 10 day forecast shows that, uh, we don’t even see *** break until Sunday. We’re still at 90 degrees. Then we head back to more seasonable averages on Monday. Notice storm chances are still around on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then we start to see temperatures *** little bit, uh, more seasonable, if not dropping below below seasonable averages by Wednesday.
