A Scranton woman stole checks, some of which came from federal health insurance programs, and used them on herself, federal authorities say.

Authorities charged Kerry Ann Elliott Beaubrun, 43, with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, Brian Miller, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced in a news release.

He said Beaubrun stole and appropriated checks intended to various payees, including those for which funds were derived from federal health care programs, including Medicaid and Medicare. She then endorsed the checks to herself that were meant for others, defrauding multiple banks and utilizing funds for her own personal expenses, according to the release from Miller’s office.

The scheme resulted in a loss of more than $300,000, according to authorities.

The charge against Beaubrun is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Health Care Fraud Takedown, a nationwide coordinated law enforcement initiative targeting individuals who allegedly participated health care fraud and opioid abuse schemes.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luisa Honora Berti.
