PLAINFIELD TWP., Pa.- A recycling center in Northampton County is being recognized by the state of Pennsylvania as an environmental innovator.
The Grand Central Recycling Facility outside Pen Argyl in Plainfield Township was a recipient of a 2026 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence.
The awards are handed out each year by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). They highlight the best in environmental innovation and expertise throughout the Commonwealth, the DEP said.

The recycling center at 910 W. Pennsylvania Ave. opened last year. 69 News took a tour of the 82,500 square foot facility during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September.
According to operator WM, the center processed 27,146 tons of recyclables in May through December of last year, which is equivalent to removing about 16,700 passenger vehicles from the road in greenhouse gas reductions.
At full capacity, the facility is expected to process up to 120,000 tons annually.
The awards were presented during an event last week in Harrisburg. Of the 26 honorees, the Grand Central Recycling Facility was the only representative from the Lehigh Valley.
