Community Blood Bank is calling on eligible donors to give blood immediately as the local supply drops to critically low levels heading into the Fourth of July holiday.
Officials say holiday weeks often bring a sharp decline in donations, as many people travel or shift their routines for celebrations. At the same time, the need for blood remains steady and can even increase as emergency departments sometimes see more trauma cases during holiday weekends.
As the sole supplier of blood products to hospitals in the region, Community Blood Bank stated that maintaining an adequate supply is essential to meeting patient needs.
“Our blood supply is at an extremely low level, and we need our community to respond now,” said Megan Solensky, Marketing and Communications Manager at Community Blood Bank. “We know people are excited to celebrate with family and friends this weekend. By donating before your holiday begins, you can make a lifesaving difference for someone spending the Fourth of July in a hospital.”
A single blood donation can help save up to three patients, making each donor critical during times of shortage. However, maintaining supply is an ongoing challenge. Red blood cells can only be stored for up to 42 days, while platelets expire after just five days, meaning donations must be consistent year-round.
Summer is typically one of the most difficult seasons for blood collection, according to officials, making holiday periods especially challenging.
