HARRISBURG — The unemployment rate for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area remained at 4.9% in May, according to data from the state Department of Labor and Industry.
The local labor force increased by 700 from April to May and rose by 4,100 from May 2025, state officials said.
Additionally, the number of employed workers increased by 600 over the month and 4,000 over the year, according to state data.
The unemployment rate for Lackawanna County decreased one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.6% in May, state officials said. The unemployment rate for Luzerne County ticked up two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.4%.
Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate stayed at 4.2% for the fourth month in a row in May, per state data.
The national unemployment rate was also unchanged over the month at 4.3%, state officials added.
