DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — As many families get ready to celebrate Independence Day, one Lackawanna County business is in the midst of its biggest rush of the year. And with America’s 250th anniversary celebration adding to the excitement, customers are stocking up on fireworks to make this Independence Day one to remember.
Customers are filling their carts with everything from sparklers to massive finale cakes at Bulldog Fireworks in Dickson City.
Owner Chuck Karam says while the store is open year-round, July 3rd and 4th are always their busiest days. This year, business is even stronger.
“We’ve had a steady flow of traffic, and we see our numbers increasing each and every day. I think with the anticipation of the 250th for the United States of America, I think people are really getting behind it to celebrate,” said Karam.
Karam says repeater cakes and reloadable shells have been some of this year’s most popular items, but he’s also seeing familiar faces returning after years away.
“The people are getting behind it and we’re seeing customers we haven’t seen in a year or two come back for this particular year because of the celebrations,” said Karam. “It’s a Saturday too, beautiful weather. Fireworks are a tradition in the country, so why not enjoy yourself at home?”
For many shoppers, it’s become a family tradition.
“Every year we get together as a family and we enjoy fireworks. And for the last almost ten years we’ve been coming to Bulldog Fireworks,” said Dave Johns of Moosic.
Others are looking to make this milestone celebration extra memorable.
“It’s a big year. We’re looking for some of the bundles they have here. I think we’re going to pick one of them up and maybe some extra stuff,” said Cohl Kincel of Madisonville.
But along with the excitement comes an important reminder.
Employees help customers choose fireworks that fit where they’ll be celebrating, and every purchase comes with safety advice.
“Alcohol and fireworks, intoxication and fireworks don’t really work well. So, keep water on hand, make sure everyone is a safe distance away and use common sense,” said Karam.
According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, fireworks consumption in the U.S. has more than doubled over the past 25 years.
And if the crowds at Bulldog Fireworks are any indication, this Independence Day is shaping up to go out with a bang.
Bulldog Fireworks will also be open on the Fourth of July for anyone still looking to grab last-minute fireworks before the celebrations begin.
