Philadelphia city leaders canceled the Salute to Independence Parade after a year of planning, citing extreme heat and safety concerns. The parade, which was set to feature participants from every state, had initially been adjusted with a shortened route to address the heat. However, organizers ultimately decided to cancel the event entirely. The floats prepared for the parade traveled along the route this morning, but there were no participants on them, and no bands marched alongside. “Ultimately just the temperature, the pure temperature. The stage behind me on Independence Hall yesterday afternoon reached 117 degrees. We had workers out there who were not feeling well and getting faint and things like that. And when you think about young people coming and they’re in marching band uniforms and they’re carrying instruments and military groups in uniform and things like that, we just couldn’t do it in a way that we could guarantee people would be safe,” Michael Delbene, president and CEO of Wawa, said.
