The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide at the Erie County Holding Center in downtown Buffalo.
Sheriff’s Office personnel were called at 11:11 a.m. Saturday after an incarcerated man was found unresponsive in his cell. Jail staff, Buffalo Fire Department staff and emergency medical technicians administered medical care in an attempt to save his life, but the man was pronounced dead at 11:54 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The case is being investigated as a homicide and potential suspects have been identified. The name of the man is being withheld pending notification of his family. The offices of the Erie County Distract Attorney and the state Attorney General have both been notified.
