FORKS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Bushkill Park celebrated America’s 250th birthday Sunday by blending history, entertainment and community at its Stars, Stripes and Skates celebration.
The event also marked the historic amusement park’s 124th anniversary with live music, rides, games and roller skating.
“I wish people would come back and make more memories in the time to come,” said Bushkill Park Manager Sue Klein.
Live entertainment was provided by Rock Revival Band. We spoke with band members Joe Swaggerty and Frank Bliskel on what it means to play for Bushkill Park.
“It fills the void for me personally, and I know for Frank as well, just to see people up there having fun,” Swaggerty said.
The celebration also focused on preserving today’s memories for future generations.
Jerry Paulus, president of the Time Capsule Foundation, invited visitors to write messages that will be sealed inside a time capsule bound for Arizona.
The capsule is scheduled to be opened in 2101.
“Whatever that message might be, it could be that we want world peace. It could be that we’re doing the best we can. Let’s protect what we have. And hopefully we left you in a better place than what we were left with,” Paulus said.
Visitors also helped preserve Bushkill Park’s past. Longtime supporters Jim Blasco and Jack Morello donated historic memorabilia, including a banner dating back to the 1930s and a brass carousel ring once grabbed by riders for a chance to win a free ride.
“A lot of memories,” Blasco said. “I’ve come in here over 50 years.”
The Stars, Stripes and Skates celebration continued through 9 p.m. at Bushkill Park in Forks Township.
