In 1776, Philadelphia became the birthplace of a new nation. Now, 250 years later, Pennsylvania remains at the center of America’s independence, especially as it relates to affordable and reliable energy.
From the bold, brave, and historic actions taken two and half centuries ago in Independence Hall to Pennsylvania’s outsized role in ushering in a new era of energy abundance, strength, and independence, our commonwealth is at the center of America’s ongoing march toward a freer, safer, and more prosperous nation.
Pennsylvania coal fueled the Industrial Revolution. Pennsylvania oil fields launched the modern petroleum industry. Pennsylvania steel built the bridges, railroads, and skylines that transformed the country. And our abundant resources helped America’s courageous military win two world wars.
Today, Pennsylvania’s ample natural gas is strengthening America’s energy security, supporting tens of thousands of family-sustaining jobs, including our skilled building trades. It has bolstered manufacturing and positioned our country to lead in the digital revolution — all while advancing environmental and conservation progress.
We’re a nation of innovators, problem solvers, and pioneers. Innovation requires energy. Every factory, hospital, school, home — every breakthrough technology — depends upon affordable power that is delivered where it’s needed, when it’s needed.
Pennsylvania’s role has never been more important. If we are to continue to enhance the quality of life of every American, affordable and clean energy is not optional – it is essential.
Today, the Commonwealth produces over 7.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas each year – 20 percent of the nation’s supply – making our state one of the world’s leading energy producers. More than half of Pennsylvania households rely on natural gas or propane for home heating, while natural gas generates approximately 60 percent of the state’s electricity.
At home, that’s translated into billions in consumer energy savings, with Pennsylvania electricity generation rates remaining flat thanks to our energy abundance. But these clear and once unimaginable benefits extend beyond Pennsylvania.
Our nation’s shale revolution, led in large part by Pennsylvania engineers and laborers, has transformed the United States into the world’s leading natural gas producer, strengthening our energy security while allowing America to supply allies abroad with affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy during times of geopolitical uncertainty. Pennsylvania has been – and remains – at the center of this remarkable success.
Now, a new opportunity has emerged. After years of relatively flat electricity demand, America is entering a period of renewed growth driven by advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and re-industrial investment. These industries require growing supplies of around-the-clock power, and they are increasingly choosing locations based on one fundamental question: where can we find reliable power?
Pennsylvania is the answer. The Commonwealth is well-positioned for long-term success: abundant natural gas, a talented and experienced workforce, existing infrastructure, world-class research institutions, and a long history of powering American industry.
That’s a competitive advantage few states can match, but advantages only matter if we’re willing to build on them.
States across the country are moving aggressively to attract investment in energy infrastructure, power generation, manufacturing, and technology. Pennsylvania should be leading that conversation and working to seize these generational job-creating opportunities, not watching from the sidelines.
By embracing common sense policies that encourage responsible energy development and infrastructure investment, we can expand job opportunities, strengthen local communities, and continue to fortify America’s leadership.
Pennsylvania was at the center of charting America’s path to independence. Today, we have another opportunity: helping secure the reliable, affordable energy that will power America’s economy, strengthen our national security, and fuel the next generation of innovation.
