A massive sinkhole closed Cumberland Road in McCandless Township Sunday night. This is right in front of UPMC – Passavant Hospital.Officials say the hospital is still open, and can be accessed through the Babcock Boulevard entrance, or from the Peebles Road side of Cumberland Road.If you normally travel in this area, expect delays. Detours are posted in the area.The township’s public works team is coordinating with crews to evaluate the damage. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 spoke with Town Manager John Schwend. He said the infrastructure in the area is owned by both PennDOT and McCandless. “We look at our mapping, we see, how large the pipe is at the bottom. There’s a manhole next to that about 30ft deep. We’ll have to see if the pipe at the bottom is collapsed. The pipe in the middle is collapsed, and then figure out who’s going to repair it.”A spokesperson for PennDOT said the department was notified of the damaged pavement on the township-owned portion of Cumberland Road. The department is assisting with the investigation of the drainage system.There is not a clear timeline yet for when the sinkhole will be fixed. Schwend said it could get worse before it gets better. “Something that causes a sinkhole is going to be a water situation underground as we get more rain. There’s a pipe that’s collapsed under there. It could continue to get worse. That’s why we barricaded a little further around the sides. Keep everybody away from here, too.”Officials have not said what exactly caused this sinkhole. No injuries have been reported.
