Allegheny County Jail warden leaving for job in North Carolina
TONIGHT. THIS CAME UP SEVERAL TIMES THROUGHOUT THE MEETING. WE KNOW TONIGHT THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL OVERSIGHT BOARD IS NO LONGER CONDUCTING ITS OWN OPERATIONS INVESTIGATION ON THE INCIDENT BECAUSE OF A REQUEST FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY. THIS IS A PRETRIAL DETENTION CENTER. PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALIVE TO BE SEEN BY A JUDGE. A DEADLY ATTACK INSIDE THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL WAS REPEATEDLY BROUGHT UP DURING PUBLIC COMMENT AT THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL OVERSIGHT BOARD MEETING THURSDAY. ON MAY 13TH, ALLEGHENY COUNTY POLICE SAID. 44 YEAR-OLD TYRONE GOODE WAS ASSAULTED BY MULTIPLE OTHER INMATES IN HIS CELL. HE LATER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. I DO BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE ON THE BOARD AND IN JAIL ADMINISTRATION IS HORRIFIED AT THE MURDER OF MR. GOODE. BUT THAT IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. THE BOARD WAS INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT, BUT ACCORDING TO BOARD MEMBER BETHANY HALLAM, THAT CHANGED WHEN THEY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM ALLEGHENY COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY STEPHEN ZAPPALA. IN THE LETTER OBTAINED BY PITTSBURGH’S ACTION NEWS FOUR, THE D.A. ASKED THE BOARD TO DELAY ITS INVESTIGATION TO AVOID COMPROMISING A SEPARATE COUNTY POLICE INVESTIGATION. WE HAVE CEASED OUR INVESTIGATION AND ARE RELYING ON THE COUNTY POLICE INVESTIGATION TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW IT HAPPENED, HALLAM SAID. SHE REVIEWED VIDEO OF THE INCIDENT AND TALKED WITH INMATES WHO WERE HOUSED IN THE POD, WHERE IT HAPPENED, BEFORE RECEIVING THE LETTER, THE D.A. ALSO ADVISED AGAINST SPREADING INFORMATION ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION. I CANNOT SPEAK TO WHAT I SAW IN THE VIDEO, BUT I CAN JUST SAY I SAT WATCHING IT WITH MY EYES WIDE AND MY JAW DROPPED. A VIEWER REACHED OUT TO PITTSBURGH’S ACTION NEWS FOUR, ALLEGING FOR PSYCHIATRIC MEDICAL PROVIDERS AT THE JAIL ARE RESIGNING BECAUSE OF A LACK OF SUPPORT AND LEADERSHIP. HALLAM, WHO SAID SHE RECEIVED THE SAME INFORMATION, INQUIRED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF EXIT INTERVIEWS DURING THE MEETING. THEY REACHED OUT WITH SOME ALLEGATIONS ABOUT THEM FEELING LIKE THEY WERE BEING FORCED OUT OF THEIR JOB, THAT THEIR SUPERVISORS WEREN’T WILLING TO NEGOTIATE SALARY WITH THEM. I AM NOT AWARE OF THAT SITUATION, BUT WE HAVE DONE INTERVIEWS WITH DOESN’T MATTER THE RANK. OKAY, WE WILL TALK TO FOLKS IF THEY WANT TO TALK, HALLAM SAID EARLY ON THAT GOODE WAS STABBED. THAT INFORMATION WAS BACKED UP BY A CORONER REPORT RELEASED SHORTLY AFTER THE INCIDENT. NOW, IN HIS LETTER, THE D.A. CALLED THIS, QUOTE, PREMATURE FALSE INFORMATION, SAYING PRELIMINARY INFORMATION INDICATES THE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO THE HEAD

The Allegheny County Jail warden is leaving his position.The county announced Monday that Trevor Wingard accepted a job as chief deputy secretary of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.Wingard was hired by Allegheny County in January 2025. We’ve made huge strides and the staff will continue that forward momentum after I depart. The Allegheny County Jail warden is leaving his position.
