About seven years ago, Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz was looking for a way to dig her cafe in Reading, Pa., out of a tax hole. She had fallen behind on passing along the state’s 6% sales tax to government coffers, consumed with the daily demands of running the breakfast and lunch spot.
In search of help, she stumbled upon an app that attached to her point-of-sale system and automatically set aside the sales tax portion at the end of each day. The software, which cost about $40 a month, also would submit those payments monthly to the state.
