A woman who helped pass landmark legislation advocating for college campus safety following the murder of her 19-year-old daughter in a Lehigh University dorm room has died.
Connie Clery died on June 23 at the age of 95, according to her obituary.
In 1986, Connie’s daughter, Jeanne, was raped and murdered inside her Lehigh dorm. In the years that followed, Connie and her husband, Howard, channeled their grief into a mission to make college campuses safer and ensure crime victims were treated with dignity and compassion.
The Clerys founded Security on Campus, now known as the Clery Center, which helped pass several major federal laws, including the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.
The Clery Act is a consumer protection law designed to provide transparency around campus crime policies and statistics, according to the Clery Center website.
She is survived by her sons, Howard K. Clery III and Benjamin F. Clery.
